Creating a Robotic Garbage Truck with Lego Mindstorm :: Robotics
Includes Source Code Robotic Garbage Truck Abstract For my final project I decided to build a robot garbage truck that can drive by itself on a ?road? and pick up garbage. This garbage truck would also be able to distinguish from trashcans and anything else that might be in its place. This robot is a one-of-its-kind creation that has to my knowledge never been tried before. So I could replicate a real garbage truck as much as possible, I researched how garbage trucks work and how they have changed in the past 85 years of existence. I decided to create an arm unlike any garbage truck so far only because regular garbage truck arms need to be placed in a very small area to be able to lift up the trashcans. In seven days of work I was unable to finish creating my robot. I was only able to completely build the robot and partially program it. I believe that I made tremendous progress in building this robot in the time that I worked on it. This project has taught me so much on how to build a vehicle that replicates something useful for manki nd. Background Robotic Garbage Truck Garbage trucks have been around since the early 1920?s and are getting more and more advanced each year. But even now in the 21st century the same basic principle of how garbage trucks are run has remained the same. They still require 1-2 sanitary engineers to operate a garbage truck, and they still have to take the trash from your home to landfills. Advancements could be made and an event has proven that robotic vehicles can drive on their own. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) grand challenge is hosted a first of its kind all robotics race through the Mojave Desert from Barstow, California to Las Vegas, Nevada. Two hours before the race the contestants are given the route at which their robots will have to take in order to win the race. Once the race starts human intervention will result in disqualification. The prize for finishing in the fastest time is one million dollars. So far no one has ever finished the race the farthest robot going just over seven miles, but they have made tremendous progress. Imagine this cutting edge technology incorporated into garbage trucks. This would eliminate the need for humans to transport garbage from your home to a landfill. Garbage companies like Waste Management would save millions of dollars because they wouldn?

Augustus of Primaporta Analysis
The statute Augustus of Primaporta depicts the Roman emperor Octavian, son and heir of Julius Caesar and defeater of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Created circa 20 C.E., and found in the home of Octavianââ¬â¢s wife Livia at Primaporta, this marble statue today stands in the Musei Vaticani in Rome (Janson 2007b 191).Measuring 6 feet 8 inches in height, and perhaps a copy of a bronze from around 20 BCE, the Augustus of Primaporta depicts Octavian as an ââ¬Å"ageless youth,â⬠as did all statues of Octavian until his death in his late seventies (Janson 2007b 191). Based on the bronze Doryphoros (ââ¬Å"spear bearerâ⬠) by Polykleitos, which depicts a perfectly harmonious and balanced male athletic body in contrapposto (hips tilted such that one leg seems to be moving while the other stands still) supported by a tree stump, the Augustus of Primaporta presents Octavian Augustus in a heroic, idealized contrapposto form (Janson 2007a 121).Smooth-faced Octavian is shown in this stat ue wearing battle armor, with his arm raised ââ¬Å"in a gesture of addressâ⬠in order to signify his claim to authority (Janson 2007b 192).This oratorââ¬â¢s gesture had been adapted from another historical statue, the first century BCE Aulus Metellus, a bronze statue depicting an orator that today can be seen in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Florence (Stokstad 197). Next to his right ankle, a small Cupid (also known as Eros, the son of Venus) can be seen playing with a dolphin. This cupid is not merely decorative, but rather serves as a ââ¬Å"strutâ⬠to strengthen the statue (Janson 2007b 192).The statute contains many symbolic references to Octavian Augustusââ¬â¢s claims to power. His divine claims to power are represented through several visual references. To begin with, like the Egyptians and Greeks before him, and many Roman emperors after, Augustusââ¬â¢ statue represents him as being ââ¬Å"enveloped in an air of divinityâ⬠(Janson 2007a 121).The statueââ¬â¢s generally godlike appearance is augmented by Octavianââ¬â¢s bare feet, which are the mark of a god, and the Cupid, which represents the descent of the Julian family (of which Augustus was part) from Venus through Aeneas, his Trojan ancestor (Janson 2007b 192). His earthly claims to power are displayed through references to his military and diplomatic victories. The dolphin represents his earthly claim to power by evoking the sea at Actium where Octavian Augustus defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra and ended 100 years of civil war in the Roman Republic (Janson 2007b 192, Lodge 1).Augustusââ¬â¢ breastplate, which depicts an allegory in which either Tiberius or the god Mars accepting Roman standards from a Parthian soldier, recalls his diplomatic victory over the Parthians in 20 BCE, when he was able to negotiate the return of some Roman legionary standards that had been captured in 53 and 36 BCE (Janson 2007a 122). Finally, his oratorââ¬â¢s pose symbolizes his ability to rule by reason and persuasion, rather than through force (Stokstad 198).The Augustus of Primaporta was a part of the Augustan period, a new Roman idealist movement that was ââ¬Å"grounded in the appearance of the everyday worldâ⬠(Stokstad 197, Honour 198). This type of sculpture assimilates the traditions of ancient Greece with more modern Roman references. This statue, a good representation of the movement, has been described as a ââ¬Å"sophisticated combination of Greek idealism and Roman individuality,â⬠which came together to form ââ¬Å"a new Augustan idealâ⬠(Stokstad 197).The godlike idealized body of Augustus, with its perfect Greek athletic figure, its tight cap of layered curls, its prominent brow and nose, and its contrapposto pose, is combined with realistic portraiture in the head so that Augustusââ¬â¢ features are clearly distinguishable (Stokstad 197, Lodge 4).This type of Roman idealist sculpture was frequently used as imperial politic al propaganda. The references to divine and earthly claims to power and the posture and beauty of the statue, combined with the distinctive portraiture, stand for the proposition that the individual Octavian Augustus was a noble and powerful ruler. The visual imagery of the statues of this time, such as the Augustus of Primaporta, was key in creating a ââ¬Å"new mythologyâ⬠of the imperial line (Lodge 2). This statue solidified and paid homage to Augustusââ¬â¢ claim to authority by depicting his many claims to rule. Later statues of Roman emperors would draw on the Augustus of Primaporta as propaganda to tie them closer to the Julian line (Lodge 3).Another example of the Augustan style, which similarly shows Augustus in a particular light for propagandistic purposes is the Via Labicana Augustus, which originally dates from 20 BCE, and a copy of which can be found in the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme at the National Museum in Rome (Lodge 2).This sculpture shows Octavian Augustus ââ¬âagain with distinguishable features on the headââ¬âdressed as pontifex maximus, the highest priest in the ancient roman religion. Showing Augustus as an idealized religious figure spoke of him as a virtuous and pious citizen of Rome, and a conserver of traditional Roman values, which conveyed another type of authority in addition to the more military and diplomatic authority portrayed in the Augustus of Primaporta (Lodge 7).The image in the Via Labicana Augustus, when combined with that of the Augustus of Primaporta, shows an imperial figure who ruled justly, piously, and well, and with the support of both heaven and earth.Works CitedHonour, Hugh & John Fleming. Learning and Memory Worksheet Essay
1. Write a 450- to 700-word essay to describe the relationship between classical and operant conditioning. Explain their elements and how they differ from one another. Additionally, provide an example for how learning can occur through each mode of conditioning. Explain how Ivan Pavlov and B.F. Skinner contributed to the study of learning and conditioning. Ivan Pavlov contributions were the start and the rise of behaviorism in psychology. His experimental methods influence the growth of behaviorism, and helped move psychology away from introspection and subjective or the objective measurement of behavior in which played a great part in our study. Hey study the behavior of Dogs in which in term he develops a new form of learning .This new form of learning is called classical conditioning a form of learning in which reflex responses are associated with new stimuli. Ivan Pavlov also used a bell in which as a neutral stimulus, he would ring the bell when the dogs were given an unconditioned stimulus, meat powder. The result is that the dogs than will respond salivate when the unconditioned stimulus is given to the dogs. This stimulus is called the conditioned stimulus; it changes from an unconditioned response to a conditioned respond. The dog quickly learned the difference from the bell and receiving an unconditioned stimulus. As for B.F skinner who also staunch behaviorism became a force in psychology and the therapy techniques in fact that we still used extensively today. He also made the Skinner box which is also called operant conditioning chamber in which had like a metal lever and a tray in which food can be drop for the rats are in a tray. These two played an important role in our psychologyââ¬â¢s history gave us an important contributions to our understanding of human behavior in which we can use to go by. 2. Match the correct type of memory with its respective function.

Body Modifications Essays
Body Modifications Essays Body Modifications Essay Body Modifications Essay In china foot binding was very popular from the late 10th century onward to the mid -20th century. It was there culture to have small feet, between the ages of two- five years old the parents will perform foot binding on their daughter. It was done at a young age because the arch of the foot wasnt fully developed as yet. The painful process was done to prevent further growth. Chinese men were attracted by the tiny narrow foot, which was known as the golden lotus. It may not sound like a body modification but it is and was very popular to the Chinese culture. Another example of cultural modification is piercing. Back In the 17th century a male wore earrings to show he was a pirate. Tribes across Africa, Southeast Asia, north and South America and Ethiopia participated In lip piercing. It was done to enlarge their lips to accommodate a large plate. Another reason for body modification Is one religious belief. The earliest evidence of tattoo began 2000 BC in ancient Egypt. In the Philippines tattooing to some was a form of rank or accomplishments and to others they believed it had magical qualities. In Japan tattooing was for spiritual and decorative reasons dating as far back 10,000 BCC. The Ancient Egyptians and Romans perform plastic cosmetic surgery for religious reasons. The Romans perform such surgeries like repairing damage ears in the 1st century SC. In India branding is done to show religious initiation and symbolizes membership to a particular spiritual group. Also in India the females place a bind in the middle of their foreheads because its one of their religious beliefs. It Is done only to those ladles that are married. At the College of The Bahamas the male fraternity brands their skin to show membership to that group. Lastly, people modify their body for physical and cosmetic enhancements such as cosmetic/plastic surgery which is now very popular among teens and adults. You will find people getting cosmetic surgery to delay aging effects which cost thousands of dollars to be done. Persons also get surgery on their nose, stomach, breast and hips just to change their body most of the time to enhance their sexual appearance. However, some get the surgery because either they was born with a disintegration or as in an accident and probably needed a surgery done on their nose. Cosmetic surgery is done for reconstructive reasons and for fashion reasons. The American society of plastic surgeons discovered a few reasons why teens and adults participate in cosmetic surgery. Teens said its a way to fit in and to look acceptable to friends and peers. Whereas, on the other hand adults said Its a way to stand out from the crowd. Plastic surgery Is done to boost ones confidence and self- esteem. Celebrates can have effects on their fans; well superstars can also have an effect on their fans. For It example, a person malign want to nave ten curve Ana snaps Like Kill Grassland, so a tiny or slim girl will go out and get implants. In todays society we now have numbers of technology that can perform any type of plastic surgery. In todays society males and females are participating in physical enhancements. Such as altering their skin color, placing weave in their hair and getting implants. Now days people find bleaching attractive for both male and female. From the text drowning, Bimbos and other drivers of Underdevelopment by Glenda Simms speaks about the dies changing their skin color to attract the guys. She also mentions how the ladies want to have children with light skin male. This is done because their aim is to have a pretty pickier which is a pretty girl that will grow up to be a fine lady that could participate in beauty contests. Simms also spoke about the youths bleaching their skin so that they can be accepted in the front office of a store uptown or downtown. In concluding, body modification will continue to go on because it apart of ones religious or cultural belief, or like I mention Just for physical, sexual and cosmetic enhancements. Babies are modified when they are only a couple days old, when the parents take them to get their ears pierce or to get a surgery on a cleft lip. As the parents you are already getting them involved in body modifications because to the parents its cute for the baby girl or baby boy to have an earring. We are not to Judge those persons involved in the modification of the body because its always a reason for them doing it. Heres my question to you, are you going to get tattoo, piercing or plastic surgery because youre not satisfy with your appearance?

Why Protestantism developed in North America Essay
Why Protestantism developed in North America - Essay Example Protestantism came to North America a few days before Christmas in 1606 through the Englishmen under King James. They carried with them their official religion known as the Church of England. However, their goal to baptize the Indians who were then thriving in the Virginia failed. Years later, the Puritan separatists from the Church of England who first migrated to Holland were permitted to build colonies in New England which was later became the United States. This marked the famous entry of Protestantism in the country. Puritans, like their Anglican predecessors were not able to maintain their doctrinal and spiritual rigor giving way to the birth and growth of other denominations like Methodists, Baptists, and Presbyterian. It can be seen that the doctrines held by Protestantism hugely mirrors the pluralistic values of North America. It should be noted that a religion can only prosper and flourish if it embodies the concerns of the individuals in the society (Bauer 1). Looking at the Baptists and Methodist Churches in the United States, it can be seen that their success can be attributed to their ability of successfully meeting the needs of the frontier people than any other denomination: "In face of the new challenge to the Churches, their view of the ministry and the Christian faith was most successful in finding and holding the people of the west. Furthermore, they were from their inception Churches of the common people, the underprivileged" (Bauer 6). Baptists Churches became popular in North America because of their appeal to the common people, the uneducated and dispossessed. Their ministry is led by simple individuals who have heard their calling from the Lord. Thus, the great advantage of Baptists is the abundance of workers in a locality. It should also be noted that Baptist's ministers are untrained and unsalaried (Bauer 6). Like the Baptists, Methodism is also considered as a "frontier faith" which developed after the American Revolution. The development of Methodism is also due to its "frontier structure" which suits the environment and people they are ministering to. Their ministers often travel from place to place conducting classes which latter grow as churches allowing them to reach people in isolated regions. In specific localities, it is also common to find gifted laymen who are appointed to preach if the minister is absent. This ensures that Bible studies and congregational activities are being carried out regularly. The Methodist Church is also seen to preach a "frontier message" as it carries a gospel which stresses the dignity of the poor and rural families: "The circuit riders proclaimed that their faith and that of their congregations was of more worth in the sight of God than the college-learned theologies of elite city preachers and their wealthy churches" (Methodism and the Frontier 1) Protestantism also owes its stability and sustenance to the numerous revivals which renews the commitment of members to their covenant with God. The Great Awakening is noted to have united 4/5 of Americans in the understanding of the Christian faith and life. This revival has also instilled a deeper sense of responsibility for the Indians and slaves. It should be noted that Protestantism strongly opposes slavery and emphasizes the equality of each

The Macroeconomic Situation In The United States Of America Essay
The Macroeconomic Situation In The United States Of America - Essay Example The country is facing issues with the unstable price of oil in the global market and this has also made the prices of commodity unstable and the level of inflation in the country is rather alarming (Jones, 2008). Thus, the current macroeconomic situation in the country is such that the citizens are faced with the instability of the price of commodity in the market. There are also issues with an absurd increase in the interest rate which has discouraged prospective investors from borrowing money from financial homes. The macroeconomic situation in the country has actually put the US Congress and the Federal Reserve on their toes. There are different things that can be done to salvage the macroeconomic situation in the US. The monetary policies in the country should be tightened through the use of expansionary fiscal policies that would help the country to fully recover from the economic recession that it is faced with. The problem of inflation could also be dealt with by making the ag gregate demand lower than the production capability of the economy.
